Your most recent book, Women and Gaming: The Sims and 21st Century Learning, moves us from a focus on the kinds of learning which occurs inside the game as we play towards the kinds of learning which takes place around the game as people build upon it through the mechanisms of what you would call affinity spaces or what I call Participatory Culture. You describe this as "gaming beyond gaming." What has motivated this shift of emphasis?

So I’ve spent the better part of my morning investigating the Japanese earthquake and sending notes to friends and blood brothers to make sure that people are OK. Luckily, so far everybody in my circle of friends seems to be fine, but the devastation is amazingly widespread and shocking. The current major concern seems to be centering around the stabilization of the country’s nuclear power reactors, most specifically in Fukushima. According to MSNBC news coolant is being flown in for the reactor, but it’s still an insuperably touchy situation.

Productivity? Down.  Pig destroying? Way up! The game started on iPhone, expanded to Android and other game systems (including even PS3), and there’s even talk of an animated series. Moustached pigs don’t stand a chance.
