People
Just as with online communities, people are what make APOC great. The program’s graduate classes are taught by a number of faculty and instructors with deep industry experience. Ph.D students from the Annenberg School for Communication assist with research, and our M.A. students are the talent that will power future industries.

Karishma Kirpalani (KK)
KK, thats what everyone calls me. I have been born and brought up in India, which is on the other side of the world in a reverse time zone. I love Bollywood, thats like the Indian Hollywood, watching every movie on the first day. I am a chocoholic and a shopaholic.
I completed my Masters in Business Administration from Symbiosis International University, Pune in 2008. Post that I started working in one of India`s largest business houses. When I got my job I was told during my interview that I would have to go to sell soaps and hair dye in the villages of India. That would mean living on certain days without electricity and water. So I said, this is is a challenge but lets do it. That is what a marketing professional`s first job generally is. To my very good luck, by the Grace of God on the first day of my job I was told that I would be working in the strategic marketing group that would be involved with the corporate brand. And thats where my passion for the digital media began. I have been involved in creating India`s first branded virtual world, www.gojiyo.com.
It was a fabulous experience working and learning about content development, consumer research, online marketing, social media and everything that helps in making a virtual world come alive. From there onwards I decided to carve a niche for myself and gain expertise in social media and online communities. Thats why I am here today with all you fabulous people.

Audrey "Audj" Sunu
Audrey Audj Sunu Bio PicAudrey “Audj” Sunu graduated from USC in 2010 with a B.S. in Public Policy, Management and Planning. She spent the next 2.5 years leading communications and outreach for the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles, where she taught herself the basics of online marketing, web development and social media management in a resource-strapped environment. Previously, she has interned and/or worked for a number of other disability-related organizations, including the Disability Rights Legal Center, Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center, Lindamood Bell, and Milal Mission. Upon noticing that many stellar nonprofits and social good enterprises lack inventive, well-tailored online strategies and the right people to implement them, she decided to become a part of the solution.
Audrey is excited to expand her knowledge through APOC and develop expertise in crafting compelling digital approaches, regardless of industry. In keeping with her passion to serve those with disabilities and the families affected, she also hopes to build a network and online hub for siblings of people with disabilities one day.
To unwind, Audrey tries her best to ignore the strong pull she feels towards backlit electronic devices. If she succeeds, you can find her traveling, making new friends, blogging/writing (occasionally freelancing), and attending live music performances.

Lisa Manson
Elizabeth (Lisa) Manson is currently a student in the Annenberg Program for Online Communities at the University of Southern California. Before this, she earned her Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in 2009 with concentrations in both English Literature and Linguistics, a decision that proved to be immediately lucrative. After finally deciding to leave the bagel sandwich-making business in Cleveland, Ohio (her hometown), Lisa packed up her car and, with no intention of being an actress, moved to Los Angeles. Lisa was lucky enough to start working for a Los Angeles-based arts and literature magazine, FORTH as an events writer. For FORTH, Lisa attended local gallery openings and public artwalks and wrote reviews for the blog. Working for the magazine was Lisa's first real introduction to Los Angeles, writing for an audience, and the basics of promoting an online product. Soon after leaving the magazine, Lisa began working as a copywriter for an online art auction company, Quality Art, for whom she wrote artist biographies and product descriptions. With APOC, Lisa is particularly excited to explore the online and social media elements of marketing.

Divya Goel
A California native from La Canada, I hope to make an impact on the world using Public Relations. My journey to the Annenberg began during summer 2000 during the Sydney Olympics. I stayed up late every night, watching the Olympics until midnight. My dad wasn't too happy about this, and made me a deal: if I wrote an article each day telling him what had happened the night before, he would allow me to continue to stay up late to watch the competition. I agreed and ever since then, I have had a passion for reporting and writing, but I've found that I like the public relations aspect of media much more.
Currently, I am working for the Public Relations department at Roozt.com, a retail website that only sells products from cause-related brands. I've always wanted to give back, and by being a part of a business where the core mission is to be able to use business to better the world, I feel like I am getting the experience I need to be a better person and be able to succeed in public relations, no matter the field. My dream job, however, would be to work in sports with the NFL.

Gabrielle Glickstein
Gabrielle Glickstein earned her Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Writing from Pratt Institute in 2008. Shortly after graduation, she traveled up and down the west coast to work on strawberry farms and goat dairies. After her trailer became infested with fleas, she decided farm life wasn't for her and moved to the Bay Area to put her degree to use.
As a teenager, she had taught herself HTML and built websites as a hobby. That hobby became useful during her professional life in the Bay Area, as she became a freelance web designer and manager for several small presses, a meditation center, and an investment banking firm. Many of the people she worked for were clueless about social media, and she began creating marketing plans for them to use. Watching several of her favorite presses falter in the wake of the digital era in publishing led Gabrielle to apply to the Annenberg Program on Online Communities.
In her spare time, Gabrielle bakes, walks, bikes (though not in LA...yet), writes, and eats far too much pie.
Petr Pronsati
Petr Pronsati has a BA in Journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia. He has been fascinated by the power of the internet for almost 20 years. As the editor of Update, a weekly gay newspaper in San Diego, in 1995 he created the first online version of that paper. In 2001, he became the managing editor of a start up human resources website, iWorkwell.com.
Much of Petr's career has been in the non-profit sector, working in development and communications for organizations which advocate for equal rights and organizations working toward better treatment and a cure for HIV.
Petr currently writes a blog, psquaredtothenth, where he blogs mostly about his main passions – tennis, pop culture (particularly American Idol and its former contestants) and recovery from addiction. Online communities have been a great influence on his decision to return to school after 20 years. If you need to reach him urgently, start with a post on Facebook.

Alexandra Prater
Allie is a recent graduate of Duke University, where she received a B.A. in Political Science and French, as well as a pre-professional certificate in Policy Journalism and Media Studies. While at Duke, she worked for the MSNBC news show Morning Joe and was an Investigative News Intern at the ABC News bureau in Raleigh. She also spent two years researching the international political consequences of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
After graduating, Allie worked as a Senior Communications Fellow for the Obama campaign in Philadelphia. Working on the campaign opened her eyes to the power of social media and digital platforms as outreach initiatives, and led her to apply to the Annenberg Program on Online Communities.
In her spare time, you'll find Allie searching for new music, checking out live music, trying weird foods, and hanging out in Santa Monica.
Lauren Kirkpatrick
In 2011, I graduated with a B.A. in Public Relations from San Diego State University. Immediately, I started working for a small PR firm in San Diego, but it didn't take me long to realize that the only aspect of PR that I was passionate about was social media. I started freelancing for several different nonprofit organizations, including two nonprofit education organizations. In 2012 I was hired by a small start-up called Youtern to handle their twitter account and strategy. It's my passion and desire to learn more about social media that has led me here to USC.
I was born and raised in Southern California and can't imagine not living 15 minutes from the beach. I am an avid sports fan (go lakers, dodgers and aztecs!), reality TV junkie, expert baker and DIY aficionado.
Jen Flaks (Nitzband)
Jennifer Flaks- House of Lies
I have always loved the creative aspects of print publishing, advertising and other traditional media. I started working in publishing in high school with our student run newspaper and as the Senior Editor of our school yearbook. In college, I jumped into PR/Marketing as the Publicity Director for our student-run theatre company. However, my enthusiasm and creative juices have been greatly amplified and stoked by the near unlimited creative opportunities and imaginative appeal of the Internet and other online, interactive tools.
In 2003, I earned a B.F.A. from Stephens College in Missouri, which (naturally) led me into a career in the public finance sector. After five years in investment banking, I decided to return to my creative roots and in 2011, I opened G.Stein Design. With a unique background in business and finance, an expertise in web development and interactive media, and a passion for graphic design, I have worked to move businesses - ranging from financial advisory firms and consultants to leading coalitions and economic development organizations to online retailers, travel-related businesses and actor sites - "from vision to visibility."
Marty Romero
I hold a BA in Art with emphasis in graphic design from Cal State Dominguez Hills. Currently, I supervise the design (print/web) team at Montrose Travel. Before Montrose Travel I was the owner of Tiny Brands—a Small design studio in Monterey Park. Prior to working independently, I worked as a lead print production designer for CBRE Investors and as the Art Director for the American Red Cross Southern California Blood Services Region. In 2011 I joined the Art Department at Cal State Dominguez Hills as adjunct faculty teaching graphic and web design courses (currently not teaching because of grad school).
On my off-time (what is that?) I love spending time with my family, listening to music and reading technical or programming books—without plots, as my wife likes to point out. I have a passion for teaching and learning. I own two cats (or rather they own me). I am influenced by clever solutions, Apple products and good stories.

After graduating from Southern Methodist University in 2001 with a BA in Public Affairs and Corporate Communications Gordon Kaywin accepted a position in Los Angeles California working at the renowned William Morris Agency in their Agent Training Program. Once at William Morris Gordon began learning the ins and outs of the entertainment industry while working for William Morris "World Wide Head of Television", Sam Haskell. After spending a little over two years at William Morris Gordon decided it was time to explore the feature film production and development side of the entertainment business and was hired to work for academy award winning producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen at the Jinks/Cohen Production Company. It was only after one year of working for Jinks/Cohen that Gordon was hired away to be a feature film development executive at Phil Anschutz's Walden Media where he honed his executive skills working on the development of commercial feature film projects. However, once again opportunity soon came knocking when Gordon got an opportunity to take his skill-set on the road to Austin Texas working for blockbuster film director Michael Bay's production company "Platinum Dunes" on both, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel and remake of the classic horror film, "The Hitcher".
After returning to Los Angeles Gordon partnered up with long time friend, actor Topher Grace, to form Sargent Hall Productions where over a five year period he ran both their film and TV development operations, and secured first look and overall financing deals with both FOX Television Studios and Warner Brothers Television studios. In addition, Sargent Hall, in partnership with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment was responsible for the conceptualization, development, and production of the feature film, "Take Me Home Tonight" which received commercial distribution through Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media in March of 2011. It was at this time that Gordon decided to step away from Sargent Hall Productions and begin a new journey. He decided to join USC's unique "Online Communities & Social Networking" master's program; a specialized sub-set of the esteemed Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism. Gordon will graduate December 2012.

Charles was born way back in the 20th century (1982) in the San Fernando Valley. He grew up in LA and Orange County and a series of events led him to the first relevant part of this biography; he started his undergraduate college career at Cal State Northridge. He finished up there with a B.S. degree in Business Administration /Marketing, but even before that degree was conferred, he saw what "marketing" jobs were really like (sales), and decided he didn't want that for the rest of his life. So we got right back into the CSUN party and enjoyed a couple more years there earning a B.A. degree in something much more creative and engaging — graphic design.
Now, after a few years of working as a graphic designer/web developer for a small design studio and then the non-profit SFJAZZ, and living in San Francisco, Charles is back to LA la land to add the Master's feather to his education cap. He's interested in the dynamism and power for social change that online communities bring, so he's in the Annenberg Program on Online Communities at USC. This also finally allows him to take a vested interest in the USC-UCLA rivalry!

He has worked for both a law firm and a law school and interned for a collective of LA-based writers, where he first learned how to use social networking as a professional skill. He is now a student in the Annenburg Program on Online Communities, working on a second Master’s degree. He wants to use social networking to promote and advance the arts. After receiving my MA from USC School of Cinema-TV, I started my career as a Television Programming executive at Fox, where I programmed domestic cable channels and launched their highly successful Latin American branded channel business. After 9 years at Fox, I went over to Universal as aSenior Vice President of Programming, where I oversaw the development of the award-winning action/suspense brand -- 13th Street -- and channel launches in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Latin America.
As new media came to the forefront, I moved into programming and consulting for various prominent corporations. I’ve consulted for Cablevision (launching their high-definition Voom platform, NBC-Universal (managing their Apple iTunes deal), and most recently worked for a 18 months at Microsoft building their Business Analytics tools.
Known for a rare blend of business and creative skills, and a talent for developing highly marketable programming strategies, I utilize yogic meditation, a raw food diet and channeling to overcome my psychic foreboding of the University of Michigan Wolverines' annual football disappointment. I am an architecture fanatic, jazz enthusiast and make the best espresso west of Chicago. I’m also busy instructing my five-year-old son and his young cousins on the fine art of “sports viewmanship.”

Growing up, I've never lived in a place for more than four years. My family has moved countless times in the U.S. and crossing international borders. I've lived my life between the East and West - east and west coast of U.S., and in the Eastern and Western hemisphere. The longest I spent time at one school was during my high school years, where I attended an international school in Taiwan -- Taipei American School. I've crossed paths with students and teachers from all over the world, and have learned and continued to value and appreciate meeting people from different walks of life.
I returned to the U.S. for my college education at California Polytechnic University, Pomona to obtain my B.S. degree in Business Administration, concentration in Marketing and a minor in Hospitality Management. I interned at an advertising agency called J. Walter Thompson towards the end of senior year, and started working at Hilton upon graduating. I worked at the Hilton's headquarter located in Beverly Hills for a year or so, and decided to relocate with the company to Washington D.C. metropolitan area after acquisition by Blackstone Investment company. Needless to say, the east coast was too cold for me.. so here I am!

Lisa is the Managing Editor at Outlook Newspapers, a set of weekly newspapers currently serving Pasadena and La Canada Flintridge. She did her undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and has a B.A. in English and Journalism and more than 20 years experience in computer software/technical management. Lisa began her career long before Web 2.0 and actually remembers (though not fondly) the DOS prompt. As one of the first four technical writers at Microsoft, Lisa lent her communications expertise and user interface design instincts to early versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. She went on to manage a team of Microsoft Editors and was instrumental in the company's abandoning proprietary publishing software and instead dogfooding with Microsoft Word. Lisa's other experience includes consulting in the backup, disk compression and internet filtering arenas and instructional design for Marriott Corp.
Lisa is interested in how social media impacts hyper-local news, in Google's use of the "boredom/damper" factor to determine page rank, in the need for verified tags for
certifying true primary sources and in how social media will impact middle-schoolers.
Lisa's blog is "A Likely Story" (www.lisaannjacobs.wordpress.com). She occasionally sends out a tweet or two and she refuses to believe that a social network with a wall metaphor adopted by preening teenagers will connect us in the future ().
A native of downtown Chicago, Julie graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in History and certificate in American Studies in 2002. Always interested in the intersection of arts, media and the law, she wrote her senior thesis at Princeton on the history of film censorship in America. After working at Edelman Public Relations in New York, Julie decided to forego law school and instead migrated to the west coast to pursue her dream of feature film producing. She received an M.A. in Critical Studies from USC’s School for Cinematic Arts in 2006. At USC, she was chosen by faculty to be a teaching assistant for several undergraduate courses, including "History of American Film, 1946-1975" and "Race, Class and Gender in American Film." After stints at CAA, Paramount Pictures, and GK Films, she decided to implement her public relations and media experience in the growing, forward-thinking field of social media, returning to USC to join the APOC program. She is truly excited and inspired by the possibilities that social media and online communities present for creatively fusing business and marketing strategies to shape, inform and engage people on a local, face-to-face level. Julie believes in the power of online communities to help forge true connections in the "real" world, and intends to leverage emerging technologies to create positive social impact in local communities. Outside of work and school, Julie has worked private tutor, educating children as young as six through college undergraduates. She loves yoga, the Bar Method, listening to live music, discovering new restaurants, going back to yoga and the Bar Method in order to offset calories consumed at such restaurants, and reviewing her experiences on Yelp. She just trained and ran her first (and not last!) marathon in March 2010.
